Environment

Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better.
~ Albert Einstein ~

Welcome to your Environment Page. I am your Environment Guy (ahem) chairperson, Will Skaley.

I say "your" page because, although I am in complete control (hehehe - I love this job) I would really like this to be driven by your input. So, if you have any ideas, suggestions, news stories, or comments, my e-mail is environment@gmmc.ca.

This is a page in progress, so please visit often as I plan on updating it with current environment issues affecting the club.

We are fortunate: we are alive; we are powerful; the welfare of our civilization and our species is in our hands. If we do not speak for Earth, who will? If we are not committed to our own survival, who will be?" ~Carl Sagan~

Help stop Brewsters Glacier discovery walk and keep Jasper a National treasure, not a theme park.
Canada’s treasured Jasper National Park could be on its way to gaining a theme park-like attraction. Brewster Travel Canada, owned by a US-based company, wants to blast out the side of the cliff beside the Icefields Parkway to build the “Glacier Discovery Walk” – a massive infrastructure “skywalk”, and charge people who wish to admire the view.

Please Leave No Trace

As a member of the Grant MacEwan Mountain Club you probably pride yourself in "leave no trace" principals when enjoying the mountain back country, however at times we need to be reminded. So, here they are.

A human being is part of the whole, called by us "Universe," a part limited in time and space.
He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest - a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness.
This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us.
Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures
and the whole of nature in its beauty.

~ Albert Einstein, 1950 ~

Climb the mountains and get their good tidings. Nature's peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. The winds will blow their own freshness into you, and the storms their energy, while cares will drop away from you like the leaves of Autumn.
~John Muir (1838 - 1914)~
